Qualifications

Required Education:

High school or equivalent

Required Experience:

Some experience as 3rd Mate on ocean-going ships or experience as an Able Seaman or experience as a Deck Cadet at a Maritime Academy.

Preferred Education:

A degree from a Maritime Academy

Preferred Experience:

2 years as 3rd Mate aboard ships with unlimited gross tonnage

Required Licenses and Certifications:

Licensed by USCG as Third Mate of Steam or Motor Vessel of any Gross Tons Upon Oceans, Radar Observer (Unlimited). Valid and current STCW certificate, ARPA, GMDSS. Current, TWIC, USCG Medical Certificate, Drug-Free Certificate.

Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent organizational, managerial and supervisory skills. Ability to deal with a wide variety of individuals while training Corps of Cadets in Maritime skills; ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Job Responsibilities

95%: Third Mate

The Third mate, under general supervision, is responsible for standing navigation watches on the ship’s bridge.  Collateral duties include maintenance of lifesaving appliances and firefighting equipment of the vessel and safety and maintenance of same. Must be competent with the firefighting system, breathing apparatus and lifesaving appliances. Must stand a competent bridge and deck watch knowing when to call for assistance from the Master and/or Chief Mate. Assists in the training and professional development of cadets. May be responsible to test bridge equipment prior to undocking and securing of bridge equipment on docking.

5%: Other Duties

Performs other duties as assigned.
