MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of experience in the navigation and operation of motor vessels in coastal waters.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been as a captain of a vessel (50 foot or larger).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with boating year round, in open water and near rocky shore territory.
  • Experience with maintenance and winterization of water craft.
  • Experience entering data points into navigational system software.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class will be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications including a valid United States Coast Guard 25, 50, or 100 Ton Operator’s license dependent on the agency’s vessel inventory.

The State of Connecticut Department of Agriculture (DoAg) is accepting applications for a Research Vessel Captain to join the team within the Bureau of Aquaculture.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

  • Full Time, 37.5 hours per week, 7.5 hour days between the hours of 7AM & 5PM.
  • Location: Milford.
  • Monday - Friday.
  • The selected candidate will be required to acquire and retain an Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) license prior to the end of their working test period.
THE ROLE
The Research Vessel Captain will be responsible for navigating vessels, year-round under a variety of conditions throughout Long Island Sound to collect water and shellfish samples.

Some responsibilities include:
  • Acting as pilot or navigational engineer as required.
  • Performing year-round maintenance, repair, and fueling of vessels, such as:
  • Transporting fuel by gas-can when marina fuel depots are closed in the winter months.
  • Removing water sampling vessels from the water by trailer when wind and cold temperatures create rapid forming ice sheets.
  • Maintaining the boat ramp, ensuring that it is kept clear of snow and ice clumps in order to ensure the vessels can be placed back into the water for required year-round sampling.
  • Deploying of ice eaters at our facility to prevent the Harbor from freezing solid.
  • Completing critical agency functions related to federally and statutorily mandated shellfish program work.

The Department of Agricutlture's Bureau of Aquaculture is the designated State Shellfish Authority, regulates the shellfish industry, and is responsible for shellfish sanitation in all commercial and recreational areas statewide. The bureau is responsible for classifying and managing shellfish growing areas; conducting shoreline surveys to identify pollution sources; collecting routine water quality samples; licensing and inspecting shellfish companies; and controlling for bacteria, Vibrio bacteria, viruses, biotoxins, and poisonous and deleterious substances that can cause human illness. The laboratory analyzes the samples to support the program and monitor shellfish diseases. The Bureau is also the lead on aquaculture development, the liaison between state and federal permitting agencies, and assists industry members in completing the Joint Agency Aquaculture Permit. The Bureau authorizes the placement of recovered shell for enhancement and rehabilitation services.
