Our Shipyard History: Founded in 1916 by D. R. Dunlap, our Gulf Coast shipyard first began as the Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company. It was one of the original nine emergency yards funded by the U.S. Maritime Commission during WWII, becoming one of the largest employers in Southern Alabama while producing Liberty Ships and T-2 Tankers for the war effort. Over the years the shipyard has employed thousands of people, notably including Jimmy Buffet, his dad JD Buffet, and Hank Williams Senior. Essential job duties include:

  • Ability to organize complex bid efforts without supervision including reviewing customer specifications and drawing packages to support overall estimate plans.
  • Competently reviews highly complex specifications and drawings to formulate itemized work descriptions.
  • Review the drawings /scope of work and formulate the quantum of work. Competent in all craft disciplines for estimating labor for production, as well as engineering, and support departments.
  • Identify the resource requirements in line with construction/fabrication productiveness and the project scope.
  • Develops subcontract and major material solicitations & coordinates with Engineering and Contracts departments for technical and commercial evaluations.
  • Identify the detailed material requirement and obtain competitive prices.
  • Assigns production man-hours and material costs to each work item within a project.
  • Summarizes applicable engineering and indirect costs for each work item to determine the total project cost.
  • Provide the inputs and direct the planning group to prepare the preliminary project schedule.
  • Prepare estimation/project summary for management review.
  • Compile and prepare technical and commercial proposals.
  • Ability to make high-level decisions and complete in-depth research.


  • Degree in a related field (Business, Project Management, Engineering) and/or minimum 5 years experience estimating government contracts in the ship repair industry


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily demonstrate the following:

  • Experience in construction site, manpower and equipment requirements, fabrication of piping, structure, vessels, etc., NDT and quality control system & heavy lifts.
  • Deriving quantities from the drawings, coordination with the vendors, subcontractors, clients, and consultants. Compilation of Technical & Commercial Bids.
  • Conversant with Project Planning, Costing, MIS reporting, and system software such as Primavera, M.S. Project, and Open Plan.
  • Familiar with basic shipyard operations
  • Possess a working knowledge of safety and quality requirements for Navy maintenance and repair contracts.
  • Working knowledge of NAVSEA Standard Items, FARS/DFARS, ITAR/EAR compliance, and document control.
