Required Education and Experience:
High School or GED
Five years of maritime experience aboard seafaring vessel
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
Working knowledge of deck machinery and equipment
Required Licenses and Certifications:
Must have a State issued class “C” vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment
Must have a passport, TWIC card and Merchant Mariner Credentials (MMC) or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire or before the training ship sails
Preferred Experience:
Five years of related experience
Preferred Licenses and Certifications:
USCG MMC endorsement as Able Seaman Special or greater.

What We Want
The Boatswain – Texas A&M Maritime Academy, under general supervision, assists with the training and preventative maintenance program on board the training ship. Assists chief mate with safety-inspections required for MARAD and the US Coast Guard. Performs trade work at a high-skilled level and serves as a working leader of a maintenance crew of deck cadets in a USCG license program. Responsibilities
Cadet Maintenance Supervision - Interacts positively and mentors while supervising cadets onboard the vessel and instructing in proper deck maintenance techniques, proper upkeep of all preservation and deck equipment. Schedules and performs training to cadets on safe and proper maintenance to the training ship while in-port and underway.
Deck Maintenance and Sanitation - Ensures the proper sanitary condition of all vessels public and exterior spaces, extending to TAMUG pier. Implements the preventative maintenance schedule of the vessel under direction of the captain and chief mate. Performs maintenance, troubleshoots, and makes recommendations on deck machinery and equipment. Completes repairs to vessel and department equipment. Assists chief mate with the maintenance database and scheduling system.
Deck Operations - Assists with mooring, cargo handling, longshore supervision, and coatings preservation.
Safety and Compliance - Maintains a safe working environment. Trains cadets on safety procedures and assists chief mate with safety meetings and job safety analysis. Ensures safety and security in all aspects of tasks assigned to cadets. Assists with compliance of safety equipment inspections, the USCG regulations, and annual certificate of inspection preparations. Performs other duties as assigned.
What You Need To Know
Pay Range - $25.15 to $28.85/hourly.
Please Note: This is a shipboard assignment onboard our training vessel, you will be required to travel with the vessel during shipyard period, vessel activations, and annual summer sea term. Approximately 30-40 percent of year. Ability to lift, move, pull, and/or push heavy objects. Work beyond normal business hours and/or work on weekends. Must pass a United States Coast Guard (USCG)/Department of Transportation (DOT) drug test prior to employment and participate in the University’s random drug testing program.
