What you need to know

All positions are security-sensitive. Applicants are subject to a criminal history investigation, and employment is contingent upon the institution’s verification of credentials and/or other information required by the institution’s procedures, including the completion of the criminal history check.  Must pass USCG/DOT drug test prior to employment and participate in the University's random drug testing plan for drugs and Alcohol required by TAMU System and University Rule (34.02.99 M1, 8.6.1).  Must be able to sail during all designated underway periods, including training cruises aboard the training ship and present for shipyard periods or other periods ship is away from Galveston.

Positions Available (10)

First Assistant Engineer (1):

Pay Range - $35.00-40.00 per hour

  • Requires high school GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience   
  • Must hold a current First Assistant Engineer of steam vessels of unlimited horsepower
  • Must have STEAM endorsement
  • Valid and current STCW certificate
  • Valid and current TWIC
  • USCG Medical Certificate
  • Drug-Free Certificate

Responsible for:  The First Assistant Engineer under general supervision of the Chief Engineer will serve as officer in charge of engineering spaces of the training ship on the training cruise. Stands designated engine room watch. Performs maintenance on and operates ships engine room equipment at sea and in port. Operates and maintains all equipment and systems onboard the vessel by direction of the Chief Engineer or his/her Designee. Performs as part the Engineering Resource Management Team. On call 24 hours per day. 

Machines or equipment used in the performance of essential duties:

Super-Heated Marine Boilers and related equipment, High and Low Pressure Steam Turbines and reduction gear, Diesel Engines, Electric Generators, Fuel Oil Purifier, Distribution Utilization Monitoring and Control, Bow Thruster and Other Propulsion Motors, Chillers, Refrigeration Units, Air Handlers, Compressors, Distillers, Fan Coils, MSD Units and Associated Lift Stations, Drill Presses, Lathes, Galley and Laundry Equipment, Deck Machinery, Communication Equipment and Other Auxiliary Equipment as defined.

Second Assistant Engineer (1): 

Pay Range - $33.00-38.00 per hour

  • Requires high school GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience  
  • Minimum license of a Second Assistant Engineer of steam vessels of unlimited horsepower
  • Must have STEAM endorsement
  • Valid and current STCW certificate
  • Valid and current TWIC
  • USCG Medical Certificate
  • Drug-Free Certificate

Responsible for:  The Second Assistant Engineer under general supervision of the First Assistant Engineer will serve as officer in charge of engineering spaces of the training ship on the training cruise. Operates and maintains all equipment and systems onboard the vessel by direction of the First Assistant Engineer or his/her Designee. Performs as part the Engineering Resource Management Team. Third Assistant Engineer—Engine Room (4)

Pay Range - $30.00-$35.00 per hour

  • Requires high school GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience   
  • Minimum license of a Third Assistant Engineer of steam vessels of unlimited horsepower
  • Must have STEAM endorsement
  • Valid and current STCW certificate
  • Valid and current TWIC
  • USCG Medical Certificate
  • Drug-Free Certificate

Responsible for:

The Third Assistant Engineer under general supervision of the First Assistant Engineer will serve as STCW OFFICER IN CHARGE OF ENGINEERING WATCH on the training cruise. Performs the duties of a Third Assistant Engineer as directed by the Chief Engineer or his/her Designated Representative. Stands designated engine room watch. Performs maintenance on and operates ships engine room equipment at sea and in port. Operates and maintains all equipment and systems onboard the vessel by direction of the Chief Engineer or his/her Designee. Performs as part the Engineering Resource Management Team. On call 24 hours per day.

Machines or equipment used in the performance of essential duties:

Pay Range - $30.00-$35.00 per hour

  • Requires high school GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience   
  • Minimum license of a Third Assistant Engineer of vessels of unlimited horsepower
  • Valid and current STCW certificate
  • Valid and current TWIC
  • USCG Medical Certificate
  • Requires Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of accommodation space equipment and systems such as chillers, air handlers, heating, cooling, plumbing, sanitary, commercial galley/kitchen refrigeration
  • Drug-Free Certificate

Responsible for:

The Third Assistant Engineer under general supervision of the First Assistant Engineer will serve on the training cruise in charge of accommodation maintenance. Performs maintenance on accommodation space equipment and systems.  Operates and maintains all equipment and systems onboard the vessel by direction of the Chief Engineer or his/her Designee. Performs as part the Engineering Resource Management Team. On call 24 hours per day.  May perform maintenance in the Galley at night.

Machines or equipment used in the performance of essential duties:

Chillers, Refrigeration Units, Air Handlers, Compressors, Distillers, Fan Coils, MSD Units and Associated Lift Stations, Drill Presses, Lathes, Galley and Laundry Equipment, Deck Machinery, Communication Equipment and Other Auxiliary Equipment as defined.
