Required Qualifications

  • USCG DDE 4000 HP license or higher (Assistant Engineer Unlimited, Chief Limited, etc. also accepted)

  • Valid STCW endorsements (including Basic Training)

  • Valid TWIC card and U.S. citizenship or work authorization

  • Demonstrated experience with diesel propulsion and auxiliary systems


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience on research vessels, tugs, ferries, or OSVs

  • Familiarity with shipboard hydraulics, winches, and deck machinery

  • Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to work independently

  • Interest in supporting scientific and educational missions

Description

We are seeking a licensed Designated Duty Engineer (DDE 4000 HP or higher) to join the engineering team aboard our [state-operated] research vessel. This is a unique opportunity to combine your technical expertise with a mission that advances science, education, and environmental stewardship.

As a DDE, you’ll play a critical role in ensuring safe and efficient vessel operations while supporting scientists and students conducting world-class marine research. Unlike commercial hitches, this position offers a balanced schedule, meaningful work, and the stability of state employment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, and repair vessel main engines, auxiliaries, electrical, and mechanical systems

  • Ensure compliance with USCG, ABS, and university safety standards

  • Supervise and train junior engineering staff or students as assigned

  • Maintain engineering logs, records, and preventative maintenance schedules

  • Collaborate with the Captain, Chief Engineer, and crew to ensure safe vessel operations
