Position Overview

McFarlane Ship Design is seeking a talented Marine Engineer Naval Architect to join the Monaco office (remote work an option).

Position Responsibilities

  • Function as a naval architect supporting ship stability, arrangements, hydrodynamics, ship structures and mass properties. 

  • Preparation and development of design studies, drawings and engineering calculations under supervision of an Engineering Supervisor. 

  • Frequent communication with other departments to provide them with technical assistance or information when needed.

  • Leading of naval architecture aspects of yacht refit projects and design/engineer new build projects including superyachts, luxury cruise ships, expedition vessels, and ice-class icebreakers

  • Conducting og pre-purchase surveys and technical inspections of yachts and commercial vessels

  • Development of hull models, technical specifications, hull lines, and general arrangement drawings for projects

  • Performance intact and damage stability calculations, hydrostatic analysis, weight calculations, and ballast/cargo requirements using stability software

  • Development of structural design using first principle and advanced analysis calculations, including FEA for vessel modifications and repairs

  • Performing detail design/drafting for vessel modifications, repairs, outfitting, and produce construction drawings

  • Preparing written technical plans, design calculations, and engineering reports for clients and regulatory authorities

  • Collaborating with shipyards, owners' representatives, and classification societies worldwide, and review outside engineering work on larger projects

  • Ensuring compliance with IMO regulations, SOLAS, Polar Code, ice-class requirements, and classification society rules

  • Interface with other Engineering groups, Production, Quality Assurance, Purchasing, Vendors, Regulatory Bodies, and other disciplines as required.

  • Supporting business development through client presentations and technical proposals

  • Working within schedule and budget constraints, both independently and as part of a team


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or Ocean Engineering

  • Minimum 6 years of engineering experience in ship design, yacht design, or marine engineering

  • Familiar with classification society rules (Lloyd's Register, DNV, ABS, RINA, BV) and IMO regulations

  • Proficient in hydrostatic calculations and development of hull models for stability software (GHS, Maxsurf, NAPA, or similar)

  • Proficient in 2D CAD (AutoCAD) and 3D CAD software (Autodesk Inventor or similar), plus Rhino surface modelling

  • Experience with construction drawings using CAD drafting and familiarity with shipbuilding processes and production design

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel (Microsoft Project experience also desired)

  • Excellent communication skills in English (additional languages advantageous)

  • Valid passport and ideally already able to work in France/Monaco

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with both commercial vessels and luxury yachts, including surveys and refit engineering.

Knowledge of ice-class notation requirements, polar operations, and cruise ship/expedition vessel design.

Professional Engineer certification, Chartered Naval Architect status, or Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.

Experience with plate element Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software and CFD analysis.

Proficiency in English is a must, additional languages such as French, Italian, or German are an asset.

The firm provides engineering-led support to shipyards, owners, and designers around the world, typically working on vessels in the 50 m to 150 m range. 

Using the latest CAD Techniques, it fills the market need for optimising the synergy between the cruise ship and yacht markets, bringing yacht quality to the cruise ship market and the economics of the commercial market to the yachting industry. 

Current activity has been concentrating on the Expedition Cruise ship market, and it is making a big effort to integrate ecologically friendly technologies into designs to create sustainable & green ship designs.
