Job Description:

 

The Maritime College, State University of New York, invites applications for the position of Vice Chair, Engine License within the Engineering Department. The Vice Chair will report directly to the Department Chair, Engineering Department and will hold an academic appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor depending upon quali?cations and experience in addition to the administrative title of Vice Chair.

 

The Vice Chair fills a mission-critical role in overseeing and enhancing the engine license training program at Maritime College. We are looking for an individual who is highly motivated to work with young men and women seeking a career in the merchant marine and maritime industry and also a colleague who can inspire and reinvigorate the training program, working collaboratively with the crew of the training ship, as well and faculty and staff across the campus.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

• Administration of the USCG-approved engine license training program, planning training activities ashore and aboard the College's training ship during the annual Summer Sea Term (SST)

• Directing engineering training during SST underway as Senior Engine Training Officer (SETO). The candidate is expected to participate partially or fully in at least two SST evolutions every three years.

• Teaching appropriate courses during the academic year ashore at a 3/4 load

• Assist the Chair of Engineering as needed

• Work with the Director of Maritime Education and Training on all matters involving licensure, including Summer Sea Term and Cadet Shipping

 

This position will be administrative, renewable with a 12-month obligation, including academic duties at the Assistant/Associate/Full Professor. This position is a tenure track academic appointment at the appropriate rank commensurate with quali?cations and experience. Participation in summer sea term (SST) is expected as indicated above. When not on SST, the Vice Chair will be the primary onshore administrative and logistical support.

 

Requirements:

 

Required Qualifications:

 

• A bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline appropriate to the College's engineering programs Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Facilities Engineering, Electrical Engineering or closely related field

• A valid active or inactive management-level (1A/E or C/E) USCG engineering license with STCW certificate

• Possess or be able to obtain a current valid US Passport, Transportation Worker Identification Credentials (TWIC), Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC), and Valid Medical Certificate

• Minimum of 3 years of previous experience in budget control, personnel management, and training development

• Strong commitment to fostering an inclusive environment and enabling students across racial, ethnic, identity, and socio-economic groups to reach their maximum potential

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

• Previous experience administering USCG and STCW requirements and procedures for licensure of marine engineering officers

• Industrial experience, especially in the marine industry

• Registration as a professional engineer

• Graduate Degree in Engineering

 

At the discretion of the College, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted in part where the candidate can satisfactorily demonstrate an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in this position.

 

Additional Information:

 

Classification: The Assistant, Associate or Professor 12 Months are UUP positions. The anticipated salary will be $90,000.00 to $115,000.00 for the contract and includes an outstanding benefits package (for more information, please see the UUP Full-Time Benefits-at-a-Glance).
