The Project Manager is responsible for the planning and executing projects within the Marine and Industrial markets. Clients include private Maritime and Industrial customers including the United States Coast Guard, NOAA, USACE, MARAD, and MSC. Projects range in value from $5k to $3mil. This role will report to the General Manager and will coordinate and manage on-site construction activities and effectively execute the goals of the project and company.
- Contract proficiency. On both the macro and micro level, identifying scope, deliverables and deadlines; compiling costs and submitting change orders for approval; project scheduling of Vanport crew and subcontractors to complete projects on time and within budget.
- Multi-channel multi-tasking. Vanport’s Project Manager needs to be able to handle multiple concurrent projects, including prime and subcontracts for marine modernization and repair packages for federal agencies, hydroelectric dam maintenance, and industrial in-shop fabrication and repairs. The successful candidate will work directly with clients and preservation subject matter experts to ensure deliverables fall within the applicable scope and budget.
- Project execution. As part of leadership, a Vanport Project Manager is expected to do whatever it takes to get the job done, often requiring extra time and effort that “comes with the territory.” Vanport’s PM will be working autonomously, managing the project from cradle to grave, from project scheduling, to subcontract management, to contract change orders, directing workforce, invoicing, to final submittals.
- Workforce development. The project manager will also be supporting staffing, and workforce development for necessary training and certification of welders and pipefitters.
- Positive business goals. Vanport’s management team is supportive and helps pick up the slack when deadlines are looming. We step in and pinch hit. We support each other so that everything gets done on time. We’re a small company of 4 on the management staff and +/- 22 skilled tradespersons.
- Travel. Dockside awards require PM to be onsite 2+ months at a time, typically around 4+months/year.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
PROJECT MANAGEMENT [75% OF TIME]
- Upon project award, works closely with the Lead Estimator to review project scope and ensures proper manpower planning, materials and equipment are ordered, subcontract work is well-coordinated, and POs are written.
- Maintains an open and frequent line of communication with General Manager to understand status of work-in-process, and assists as necessary with administrative coordination in dealing with changing needs of projects.
- Is responsible for project billings through company financial software and that records are accurate and up to date.
- Develops and updates work schedules on Microsoft Projects.
- Oversees project reporting including daily logs, equipment usage, safety reports, schedules and project timeline projections; creates work in progress statements and EACs.
- Executes and manages change orders, material contracts and subcontractor agreements.
- Manages costs for projects and provides regular updates to monitor against project budgets.
- Supervises subcontractor activity on project jobsites.
- Identifies issues and challenges at the jobsite and works to develop and implements solutions promptly
ESTIMATING & BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT [15% OF TIME]
- Reads and interprets drawings, specifications and RFQ documents for prospective project.
- Reviews subcontractor proposals for coverage of project scope and develops “make or buy” analyses.
- Dedicates time to seek out new work opportunities, or to improve existing systems or processes and perform other related duties as assigned. Participate in professional organizations to ensure updated knowledge of trends and practices within the construction industry.
WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT [10% OF TIME]
- Develops WPSs and PQRs as well and manages and maintains welders’ qualifications certification records, and other personnel requirements for your projects.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Maintains a high degree of integrity, loyalty and honesty; not divulging to outside parties’ information of a confidential nature pertaining to the company's operations or bids.

- Knowledge of Project Management principles and methodologies.
- Ability to read, interpret project specifications, documents, drawings, and regulatory body guidelines and rules.
- Skilled in the use of Projects, Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, and other related software.
- Able to pass background check, obtain TWIC card and gain access to local Naval, Coast Guard and other restricted-access facilities.
