BBC Chartering is one of the world’s leading companies in the transportation of non-containerized cargo, headquartered in Leer, Germany. We operate a diverse fleet of more than 150 modern, multipurpose vessels with lifting capacities of up to 800 metric tons across 30 offices worldwide.
We are continuously expanding our fleet through a substantial newbuilding program, with a focus on larger vessels offering increased lifting capacities.
For our office in Houston, we are looking for a:
PORT CAPTAIN/PORT TRANSPORTATION INSPECTOR
Your main tasks:
- Pre-planning of cargoes
- Attend in person the vessel loading or discharge
- Visually inspect cargo for damage upon arrival or discharge
- Ensure that cargo is stowed and lashed according to pre-planning requirements while maintaining proper seamanship standards
- Maintain close cooperation with the chartering, operations departments, and vessel command
- Observe planned hot work, (un)lashing and securing operations, loading and discharging activities, and provide daily operational updates to the operator
- Recommend remedial procedures to correct any violations found during inspections
- Submit final load/discharge reports, including stowage plans and picture reports, to the operator
- Discuss operational matters with the vessel command and ensure continuous communication and information flow
- Participate in post-voyage reviews of port calls together with the vessel operator
- Check and approve operational expenses incurred during attendance
- Participate in customer meetings when required
- Support local offices with operational and technical advice
- Make travel arrangements and prepare personal expense reports
Requirements:
- Must be legally authorized to work in the USA
- A bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university is required or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference is given to those from a Maritime Academy
- At least two years of experience with loading project and heavy lift cargoes
- Must be able to physically board vessels and climb ladders
- Must be able to travel weekly and make travel arrangements
- Must possess or able to acquire TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential)
- Experience using AutoCAD, LoadPlanner, Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Suite
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal) in English language
