Financial Planning Analyst

Our Shipyard History: Founded in 1916 by D. R. Dunlap, our Gulf Coast shipyard first began as the Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company. It was one of the original nine emergency yards funded by the U.S. Maritime Commission during WWII, becoming one of the largest employers in Southern Alabama while producing Liberty Ships and T-2 Tankers for the war effort. Responsible for providing support to the Executive team around financial decision making; including current and future performance analysis, an essential input to the forecasting, budgeting, and long-term planning processes as well as financial recommendations and leadership for key business developments and company strategy. Reporting directly to the CFO, the candidate will bridge the gap between accounting, corporate finance, and FP&A to ensure the appropriate coordination of all relevant financial activities.

Essential job duties include:

  • Setting and communicating the monthly and annual planning timetable with responsibility for delivering the 3-5 year plan, budget, and monthly/quarterly forecasts and projections
  • Oversee the continued development of budgeting, financial forecasting, operational plan, and modeling tools
  • Develop financial models and analyses to support long-term strategic initiatives and short-term goals and targets
  • Evaluate previous budgets and collaborate with business unit leaders to build their annual budgets and forecasts
  • Analyze business and economic trends, complete market research, and comparable company analysis
  • Act as the right-hand of the CFO in terms of forward-looking numbers, including ad hoc analysis as required and presenting at the Board and executive meetings
  • Liaison with the Financial Reporting team to ensure alignment of actuals and forecasts and overall accuracy of numbers that are represented in the monthly financial statement packages and presentations
  • Consolidate plans and results from various departments and communicate finalized plan
  • Development of PowerPoint presentations outlining the strengths/weaknesses/financial impacts of integration/acquisition/new business opportunities (similar to a private equity deal memo)
  • Sets and tracks key performance indicators (KPIs) and objectives, leads real-time financial performance monitoring, and recommends strategies for increasing financial performance
  • Providing a specific focus on developing and producing best practices for FP&A tools, systems, and processes
  • Make recommendations to management based on findings
  • Work directly with Lender and Owners on financial models, coordination of numbers and assumptions used, market research, etc.


  • Completion of a four-year college degree in accounting, finance, or a related major
  • Considerable experience in financial planning and analysis and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and ability
  • Certified public accountants (CPA) or certified financial analysts (CFA) and/or a Graduate degree (MBA) are desirable
  • Relevant industry experience preferred

  • Strong technical skills, ability to learn current systems, and be an integral part of a team in ultimate upgrade and implementation of new FP&A software and/or ERP system
  • Excellent Excel, Word, and PowerPoint skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to a changing, fast-paced environment
  • Willingness to work outside of regular business hours and/or travel
