Supervision Received:     Reports to the Marine Transportation and Marine

                                           Engineering Cruise Coordinators and to the Master of the Training

                                           Ship, Kennedy

Supervision exercised:    Subordinate professional, classified, and student personnel in areas of responsibility

General Responsibilities:

The Training Ship Kennedy offers a unique opportunity to sail a training cruise with cadets during Sea Term 2022 from January 3rd to February 24, 2022.   During the annual Sea Term, faculty and crew of the TS Kennedy support the teaching and training of freshmen, sophomore, and senior cadets in seamanship and engineering systems.  All personnel aboard the ship will be required to have a COVID-19 vaccine. Candidates sought for Deck Training, Engineering Training, and Engineering Laboratory Technician positions.

Deck Training Job Description:  These trainers will teach cadets seamanship, shipboard safety emergency preparedness, terrestrial and celestial navigation, watchstanding, and pollution awareness aboard the TS Kennedy.  Training is conducted six days a week during daytime hours.  Schedule requires flexibility in both training sessions and subject matter.  Actual subjects will be assigned based on experience. 

            Position Requirements:

  • Second Mate Unlimited USCG MMC with current STCW certifications.
  • Management level MMC and demonstrated effective teaching experience preferred. 
  • Must be comfortable independently instructing groups of students.
  • The ideal candidate enjoys mentoring and working with young people.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both written and verbally.
  • Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

Engineering Training Job Description:  These trainers will teach cadets in the “hands on” laboratory and lecture components of the engineering training program. Possessing excellent knowledge of steam engineering, the successful candidate must have the ability to deliver professional instruction to cadets and evaluate cadet S.T.C.W. assessments. Training is conducted six days a week during daytime hours.  Preferred areas of specialization include: internal combustion engines, machine and hand tools, hydronic heating systems, brazing and soldering, marine sanitation, instrumentation, hydraulics, fresh water distillation, steam generators, electrical motors, heat exchangers, and pumps.

          Position Requirements:

  • Second Assistant Engineer’s Unlimited USCG MMC with current STCW certifications for Steam, Motor or both.
  • Prior engineering training experience preferred.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both written and verbally.
  • Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

Engineering Laboratory Technician Job Description:  We are seeking marine engineers to assist in Kennedy’s Engineering Training space and shipboard laboratories.  The successful candidate will assist in the preparation of lab spaces, train students in the “hands on” laboratory and lecture components of the cadet engineering program and evaluate cadet S.T.C.W. assessments.   Training is conducted six days a week during daytime hours.  Preferred areas of specialization include: internal combustion engines, machine and hand tools, hydronic heating systems, brazing and soldering, marine sanitation devices, instrumentation, hydraulics, fresh water distillation, steam generators, electrical motors, heat exchangers and pumps.  

Position Requirements:

  • Three years of experience as a shipboard engineer and familiarity with main engine, auxiliary systems, and electrical systems. 
  • Prior engineering training experience preferred.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both written and verbally.
  • Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.
