Job Description:

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

• Safe operation of the college's 1979 USCG UTB 41 "Sea Lab" for college functions and community programs

• Maintain the safety of the crew, students, and guests

• Operating the vessel in accordance with the mission of the SUNY Maritime College

• Issuing appropriate orders in a clear and simple manner

• Implementing and reviewing the SUNY Maritime College's Waterfront Department Safety Management System and reporting deficiencies to the College leadership

• The safe and efficient operation of all machinery aboard the vessel

• Ensuring the cosmetic upkeep of the vessel is maintained

• Ensuring that lifesaving and firefighting equipment are regularly inspected and properly maintained

• Ensuring that all pollution prevention measures are employed

• The safekeeping of a navigation watch

• Provides the company with the necessary means to guarantee the maximum effectiveness of the Safety Management System

• The maintenance of logbooks as required

• Guarantees that ship's journals and certificates etc. remain up to date and notifies the safety organization of any changes

• Ensuring the Maintenance System is kept up-to-date and ensuring that logbooks are kept up to date

• Reports, resolves, and analyzes irregularities, accidents, and incidents

• Monitors the technical performance of the ship

• Acts as coordinator in emergency situations

 

Requirements:

 

Required Qualifications

 

• USCG Master's License for Steam, Motor and Auxiliary Sailing vessels of 50 Gross Registered Tons upon coastal waterways

• 3-5 years' experience on similar vessels

• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills

• Possession of a valid Driver's License. Must have a motor vehicle record that is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

• USCG Master's License for Steam, Motor and Auxiliary Sailing vessels of 100 Gross Registered Tons upon coastal waterways

• Competence in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel

 

Additional Information:

 

Classification/Salary Range: The anticipated hourly rate for the position is $50 - $100 per hour commensurate with experience and certifications. Review of applications will commence immediately and conclude when position is filled.

 

Special Notes: FLSA non-exempt position, that is, eligible for overtime monies.
