Job Description:

The Marine Transportation Department is currently recruiting for a one semester (Fall 2022) Visiting Lecturer teaching position. There is a possibility of another semester being available for the immediate following semester, in Spring 2023, personnel actions pending. Incumbents will teach courses as described below as the needs of the Department, Department Chair, and their background allows.

Incumbent will be assigned courses in ECDIS and Voyage Planning, including simulator labs, and Rules of the Road. Knowledge of simulator operations will be helpful, but not a requirement.

Other potential topics may include Vessel Operations, Seamanship, Rescue Craft, Management and Maritime Regulation, Basic and Advanced Navigation - including Celestial, Ship Handling, Rules of the Road, Stability, Ships Construction, License Preparation, and Simulator Operations as an example, but can include others, as needs of the Department dictate and their background allow.

The experiential education component of some ship and license related classes might involve teaching outdoors on the pier, onboard the Training Ship, in small boats and at the Firefighting field. Candidates should be comfortable teaching in these environments.

The selected individual will participate in campus and departmental meetings, departmental projects, counseling and advising students, holding office hours to providing academic and professional assistance to their students consistent with departmental polices and/or as directed by the Department Chair.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications

STCW OPERATIONAL Level License, Unlimited/Oceans with experience as either a Third or Second Mate on merchant vessels of unlimited tonnage vessels. Sea service on foreign flag vessels is acceptable. Third or Second Mate Unlimited Domestic License may be acceptable, depending on experience

Experience on commercial vessels of any type, commensurate with experience, including military sealift, dry cargo and liquid cargo, bulk, container, passenger, offshore, tug, ITB/ATB, etc.

Current familiarity and experience in the international regulatory environment and SMS

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Marine Transportation or a similar related field
  • STCW MANAGEMENT Level License, Unlimited/Oceans with a minimum license level as a Chief Mate on US Flag merchant vessels of any tonnage, or if service is not onboard US Flag vessels, must hold a STCW US Unlimited /Oceans License Credential.
  • Sailing experience as either Master or Chief Mate is preferred
  • Experience in Maritime education and /or training or familiarization responsibilities, ashore or afloat.

Additional Information:

Classification/Salary Range: The Visiting Lecturer will be a non-tenure track, one semester appointment (August - December 2022). The anticipated salary range is $28,000 - $30,000 for the contract and includes an outstanding benefits package (For more information please see the The UUP Benefits Summary). Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Review of applications will commence immediately and conclude when the position is filled.

Opportunity exists for this candidate to apply for, and potentially continue employment onboard the Training Ship EMPIRE STATE for Summer Sea Term 2023 in various positions within the Deck Department. The positions the candidate might apply for include Deck Training Officer, Watch Officer or Deck Maintenance Officer. Special Notes: Fair Labor Standard Acts (FLSA) Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.
