Education and Experience:  High school diploma/GED and three years experience in the servicing and repair of marine engines and related marine equipment on small ferries at least 65 feet in length.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Following are some highlights of what is needed to be successful in this position.

  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices used in marine maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the National Fire Protection Association requirements for fuel tank installations, ventilation systems, exhaust systems and USCG requirements for inspected vessels.
  • Computer literate and able to work with an existing preventive maintenance program.
  • Familiar with developing, implementing, and maintaining an inventory of spare parts and materials for marine equipment.
  • Commitment to customer service and safe passenger vessel operations in a team environment.
  • Commitment to safe operations, utilizing correct safety equipment, personal protective equipment, and tools/guards in the manner in which they were intended.
  • Commitment to stop work if there is a concern over safe execution of any job or task
    • Understanding of the mechanical and electrical systems and engines aboard a fast-ferry vessel.
    • Hands-on experience with mechanical and electrical systems and hands-on experience with marine electronics installation, maintenance and repair.
    • Welding experience is desirable.


Position Summary:  We are looking for a Marine Mechanic to join our team.  This person will be responsible for maintaining the vessel, performing light-medium repairs and supervising heavy repairs.  The person in this position will also conduct daily preventive maintenance, ad-hoc repairs, organize and order spare parts.  The person in this position will also maintain and repair high-speed Caterpillar, MTU, etc. diesel engines, water-jet propulsion and marine diesel generators, install, maintain, and repair marine electronics, inspect and evaluate the vessels’ primary and auxiliary systems and ensure that the machinery and machinery spaces are maintained in a safe, orderly fashion compliant with applicable requirements and follow good marine practice.

This position is also responsible for the repair, as appropriate, of diesel propulsion engines, fuel systems, lubricating systems, marine electrical systems, water cooling systems, heat exchangers and related marine equipment.  The person in this position is also responsible for disassembling, repairing, rebuilding and reassembling marine transmissions, reduction gears, manual and hydraulic clutches; and aligning shafts, struts and shaft logs.

The person in this position will sail on boats to determine service needs and maintenance requirements; conduct test runs after completing major repairs and modifications and will make adjustments to the repaired equipment during and after test runs.

The person in this position will also maintain inventory and order lubricants, filters and spare parts for all machinery.  This position is also responsible for maintaining records of all maintenance and repair work and of the "in-service" hours of each piece of marine equipment to ensure proper servicing of the equipment and major engine overhaul as recommended by the agency.

This position is also responsible for performing routine inspections of the vessel and its components, checking on all operating and safety equipment as well as electronics componentry to ensure that the vessel is seaworthy in every respect.

This position reports to the Marine Operations and Maintenance Manager.

Salary Range:  The range for this position is $39.33 - $52.90 per hour, commensurate with experience. With rare exception, initial appointments are usually made at Step 1 ($39.33).

Hours of Work:  Work will be performed on vessels after service hours during the week and on weekends. These hours may vary depending on the business needs of the agency.  As the business needs of the agency change, applicants must also be available to work any hours of operation including weekends and all holidays.  The schedule for this position may vary from week to week and may include weekend and holiday work on a permanent basis.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:  This position requires vision, dexterity, strength, mobility, voice, and hearing capabilities as set forth in USCG licensing standards (  This position may occur in the hours of darkness, outdoors, at sea, and in stressful situations. This position will require lifting heavy objects, crouching for extended periods, lengthy mechanical work in very small spaces, climbing ladders, and entering through narrow hatches & passageways.
