Marine Mechanic

 

 

Position Summary:  We are looking for a Marine Mechanic to join our team.  The person in this position will perform preventive maintenance on a small ferry vessel, execute light to medium repairs, and supervise heavy repairs in conformance with agency policy. This position is also responsible for conducting daily preventive maintenance, ad-hoc repairs, organizing and ordering spare parts.

 

The person in this position will also maintain and repair high-speed diesel engines, Hamilton water-jet propulsion, marine diesel generators and install, maintain, and repair marine electronics.  This position is also responsible for inspecting and evaluating vessels, primary and auxiliary systems. The person in this position will also ensure that machinery and machinery spaces are maintained in a safe, orderly fashion compliant with applicable requirements and following good marine practice.

 

This position is also responsible for repairing diesel propulsion engines, fuel systems, lubricating systems, marine electrical systems, water cooling systems, heat exchangers and related marine equipment.  The person in this position will disassemble, repair, rebuild and reassemble marine transmissions, reduction gears, manual and hydraulic clutches; and align shafts, struts and shaft logs.

 

The person in this position will need to sail on boats to determine service needs and maintenance requirements; conduct test runs after completing major repairs and modifications and make adjustments to the repaired equipment during and after test runs.

 

This position is also responsible for maintaining inventory and ordering lubricants, filters and spare parts for all machinery.  The person in this position will need to maintain records of all maintenance and repair work and of the "in-service" hours of each piece of marine equipment to ensure proper servicing of the equipment and major engine overhaul as recommended by the agency.

 

The person in this position will also need to perform routine inspections of the vessel and its components, checking on all operating and safety equipment as well as electronics componentry to ensure that the vessel is seaworthy in every respect.

 

This position reports to the Marine Services Director.

Salary Range:  The range for this position is $38.37 - $51.61 per hour, commensurate with experience. With rare exception, initial appointments are usually made at Step 1 ($38.37).

Hours of Work:  Hours of operation for the Marine Services division are tentatively 5:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday and 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 midnight on Saturdays. These hours of operation may change depending on the business needs of the agency.  As the business needs of the agency change, applicants must be available to work any hours of operation including Saturdays and all holidays.  The schedule for this position may vary from week to week and may include Saturday work on a permanent basis.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Kitsap Transit employees who wish to apply must have a satisfactory performance and attendance record.  Kitsap Transit Operators with any of the following criteria in the last twelve months are excluded from recruitment opportunities:

Education and Experience:  High school diploma/GED and three years experience in the servicing and repair of marine engines and related marine equipment.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Following are some highlights of what is needed to be successful in this position.

Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices used in marine maintenance.

Knowledge of the National Fire Protection Association requirements for fuel tank installations, ventilation systems, exhaust systems and USCG requirements for inspected vessels.

Computer literate and able to work with an existing preventive maintenance program.

Familiar with developing, implementing, and maintaining an inventory of spare parts and materials for marine equipment.  Welding experience is desirable.

Commitment to customer service and safe passenger vessel operations in a team environment.

Commitment to safe operations, utilizing correct safety equipment, personal protective equipment, and tools/guards in the manner in which they were intended.

Commitment to stop work if there is a concern over safe execution of any job or task.

Understanding of the mechanical and electrical systems and Caterpillar engines aboard a fast-ferry vessel.

 

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:  This position requires vision, dexterity, strength, mobility, voice, and hearing capabilities as set forth in USCG licensing standards (https://www.uscg.mil/nmc/medical/default.asp).  This position may occur in the hours of darkness, outdoors, at sea, and in stressful situations. This position will require lifting heavy objects, crouching for extended periods, lengthy mechanical work in very small spaces, climbing ladders, and entering through narrow hatches & passageways. This position may require overtime & may be called upon outside normal business hours for consultation and hands-on support.
