Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Technical High School graduate or technical training beyond high school with transferrable skill set required; Associate’s/ Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Three years relevant work experience.
    • Hold relevant licenses or certifications; current Merchant Mariner Credential preferred (QMED or Engineering License)
    • Eligible for Transportation Worker Identification Credential; current TWIC preferred. 
      • Applicants must have a range of practical skills such as:
        • Ability to use hand tools, shop tools, machine tools, and welder to perform light fabrication.
        • Ability to maintain mechanical equipment: disassemble, identify and replace components, reassemble and test.
        • Ability to maintain electric equipment: soldering, simple wiring, use multimeter and various test equipment.
        • Ability to maintain HVAC equipment: troubleshoot, evacuate and fill refrigeration systems.
        • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, P & ID diagrams, etc.
        • Ability to program, use, and assist others with makerspace equipment such as 3D Printers, laser cutters, CNC milling machines, lathes, etc.
        • Ability to keep tidy, well-organized spaces.
        • Ability to perform all work safely and set a good example for others.  

Full-time Engineering Laboratory Technician

General responsibilities:  The engineering department has many instructional laboratories including: Auxiliary Machinery, Refrigeration, Diesel Engines, Steam Boilers, Electrical Machinery, Electronics, Welding and Machine shop, as well as numerous training aids and cutaway machinery used in support of our mission to train marine, facilities, and energy systems engineers.  The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for the upkeep of these engineering laboratories and equipment, the preparation of these labs for student use, and other miscellaneous faculty support.  Typical duties include ordering parts and consumables, making minor repairs as necessary; maintaining cleanliness and good order in the labs, inventory control, fabrication of training aids and other equipment, and supervising student assistants. Consistent with the state award of a new STEM academic building, the engineering department will create a maker space (fabrication lab) containing 3D printers, laser cutters, electronics workstations, shop tools, etc.  The laboratory technician will oversee student fabrication projects and generally support the functioning of this future lab.  The Laboratory Technician will also participate in the annual two-month Sea Term aboard the Training Ship Kennedy, normally during January and February, where shipboard activities include coordination, supervision, and instruction of freshmen in the use of hand tools to complete simple projects.  The successful candidate must participate in a random drug testing program.  

Salary:  $50,000-$55,000 The Academy offers generous benefits and a competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.  The Academy is not sponsoring immigration visas at this time.
