Job Description
Primary Purpose of the Position: As the Senior Deckhand, the primary purpose of this lead position is to assist the Captain and crew of the BaySmart Express to ensure the safe operation of the vessel. This position requires leading the crew and directing the passengers on scene in response to an emergency situation, to understand and perform preventative maintenance on systems and engines, to perform general repairs and vessel maintenance. To assist the Captain with maneuvering, navigation and proper look out when required.

Essential Functions:

1. Perform preventative maintenance and repairs of engines, machinery, electrical and other equipment aboard the vessel.

2. Assist Captain with vessel operations while underway, including, undocking/docking, anchoring, maneuvering, navigation, systems and machinery checks.

3. Incorporate on the job training, knowledge and experience to safely handle the vessel in the event the Captain becomes incapacitated.

4. Perform wheelhouse watches while underway, and safety/anchor/dock watches when required.

5. Assist Captain with crew training, orientation, drills; as well as, U.S.C.G. inspections and regulatory compliances.

6. Supervise and follow up with deckhands for all pre boarding, while underway and shut down operations.

7. Oversee deck operations such as line handling, anchoring, skiff launching and retrieval, maintenance and safety.

8. Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Other: Participate in developing organizational goals, objectives and systems. Actively participate in organization meetings, training programs and seminars as designated by the supervisor. Assist in evaluation of reports, decisions and results of the department in relation to established goals.

Minimum Work Schedule: 5-day, 40-hour workweek, some evening and weekend work. Schedule based on programmatic needs.

Minimum Qualifications, Competencies, Skills, Education and Traits: Must have five or more years experience in the Navy, Coast Guard, or Maritime Industry with at least two years on a vessel 65 feet or more in length. A background in shipboard maintenance and repairs needed. Must have a State of Texas Class "C" vehicle license, or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment. A self starter with the ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others is expected. Employment is contingent on pre-employment drug screening and background check.

Physical Effort and Dexterity: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, hand or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear, taste or smell. Additionally, these duties will frequently be preformed on a vessel, underway. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Physical Environment: Professional casual office setting and outdoor field work to include operation of a boat and other similar duties.
