Job Description
The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego is seeking to fill immediate openings for the positions of first, second and third assistant engineer.

Position Overview:

The engineers are responsible for the the safe and efficient operation of all main and auxiliary engine room machinery and plant equipment while on duty and are expected to complete any routine service or minor repair work as necessary. The engineers provide work direction to the oilers, wipers and general marine helpers in the maintenance , repair and proper operation of machinery and engine equipment in engineering spaces. They assist in loading stores, and parts, and bunkering the ship. They perform other duties as defined by the ship's senior officer during emergency situations.

Special conditions of employment:

Document - Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with valid license and endorsements as indicated below
License - Valid U.S. Coast Guard 1st, 2nd or 3rd Assistant Engineer of Motor Vessels (R/V ROGER REVELLE – 6,000HP and R/V MELVILLE – 3,000HP)
STCW95 Endorsements – appropriate to license level and for work aboard SOLAS vessels
STCW95 Endorsement - Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD)
STCW Medical Certificate (USCG-issued) or evidence of medical fitness within last two years
Document - Valid U.S. Passport
Document - Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by Transportation Security Administration (TSA)
Candidate/incumbent must comply with USCG (DOT) Regulations for Chemical Drug and Alcohol testing including pre-employment drug screening, post-employment, post-hire random and post-incident drug testing.
Candidate/incumbent's sea-going status is contingent upon passing Company physical when required.
The positions require extended periods of time at sea.
