JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB SUMMARY:
Schmidt Ocean Institute is currently seeking highly experienced candidates for the position of Port Engineer. The incumbent in this position will perform a variety of tasks in support of a 275’/82.9m globally operating oceanographic research vessel. These tasks include: schedule, coordinate, and perform vessel repair & maintenance, coordinate purchasing of parts and repair services and supplies. Perform inspection of vessel for repair & maintenance standards and procedures. Keep vessel in compliance with all regulatory agencies. Keep accurate records of all maintenance performed using company program. The incumbent may also be required to occasionally sail as a duty engineer.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Prepare specifications for shipyard and major repair activities
• Schedule routine maintenance
• Attend dockside and shipyard repair projects (during refit periods may be several months at a time)
• Research, specify, purchase and coordinate delivery of vessel equipment, supplies, parts and services
• Assist in the implementation of procedures, maintenance of documentation, and compliance with the regulatory and statutory requirements of flag state (Cayman Islands), port state, classification society (DNV/GL), International Maritime Organization (including International Safety Management system), and oceanographic research vessel trade groups
• Coordinate the organization and maintenance of the vessel drawings and documents
• Assist with maintaining and ensuring the quality control of the ship’s Preventive Maintenance System
• Assist the Deputy Director of Marine Engineering with generating reports after major repairs, dry dockings and equipment surveys
• Other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:
• Degree in marine engineering, engineering science or equivalent of a combination of technical schooling and job experience
• Minimum of 5 years of experience as a marine engineer
• Experience with procurement and logistics
• Conduct hull inspections, enter confined spaces, and survey damage (crouching, bending crawling is required)
• Lift, push or pull up to 35 lbs. of weight
• Climb stairs and ladders
• Ability to work independently with minimal or no guidance
• Possess or ability to obtain both Passport and TWIC at time of hire
• Must be fluent in speaking, reading and writing the English language

QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED:
• Possess a valid driver’s license
• Possess a valid Chief Engineer unlimited license
• STCW-95 certificates covering Basic Safety Training which includes First Aid and CPR
• Fluency in the German language

EXPERIENCE DESIRED:
• Extensive experience at-sea aboard globally operating research vessels supporting shipboard science
• Familiar with deck operations and over-the-side deployments
• Demonstrated knowledge of marine electrical and electronic systems
• Installation, testing, operation, and maintenance of oceanographic science systems
• Advanced computer literacy in the following:
- Microsoft Office (or similar)
- Windows/Unix/Linux/Mac
- Adobe Acrobat
- Preventive Maintenance Systems
- CAD
- Smartsheet, MS Project, or other Project Management software
