Job Description
The Port Engineer is a full-time, exempt position at the Seattle Maritime Academy (SMA). This position will assist the Director by administering the operations of the school vessels and associated shore equipment. The Port Engineer will be responsible for budget management and all the safety issues or concerns related to the vessels and operations. Additionally, the Engineer will ensures that personnel involved in vessel operations are qualified on SMA, Seattle Central Community College (SCCC), WISHA, OSHA, USCG, and International Safety Management (ISM) safety programs and that vessel operations are conducted in accordance with these guidelines and requirements.

Essential Functions:

•The Port Engineer is the primary vessel engineer for the underway portions of the Deck and Engineering program as well as working with engineering faculty on curriculum.
•Responsible for staffing, scheduling of vessel personnel, sea time, random drug testing, USCG requirements.
•Coordinate with the Port Captain on matters of maintenance (corrective or preventative).
•Support the Director by advising on vessel matters such as operating budgets, acquisition and disposal, and modifications/repairs.



Required Education, Experience & Abilities:

•USCG Unlimited Chief Engineers License.
•Minimum of five (5) years of documented sea time.
•Proven management and communications skills.
•Experience in USCG Certificate of Inspection process.



Preferred Qualifications:

•Experience in and an appreciation for maritime training.
•Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering and a Master's degree.
