Position Profile: The Washington State Department of Transportation Ferries Division (WSF) is looking for a Marine Mechanical Engineer to join its Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering staff. The Marine Mechanical Engineer develops and designs mechanical systems on board the vessels, including sea water piping, engine cooling, exhaust and hydraulic systems, etc. These systems become obsolete over the extended lifetime of the vessels (up to 60 years) and need to be redesigned, modified, and adjusted to meet the current needs. The Marine Mechanical Engineer is also responsible for the SOLAS upgrade of designated vessels.

The plans and reports must be prepared in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 46 and other US Coast Guard regulations including Navigation and Inspection Circulars. The Marine Mechanical Engineer closely works with other engineering staff and designers to develop the plans and data for submittal to the Coast Guard for approval.

The ideal candidate is proficient in Microsoft Office products, pipe design software, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software. They have a Professional Engineer’s license and a minimum of three (3) to five (5) years’ experience working with marine mechanical systems. And they accept the challenge of delivering individualized designs per vessel as the vessels are all different and the maintenance needs differ from vessel class to class. If you find satisfaction in seeing what you designed and getting immediate feedback, this might be the job for you!
