DESCRIPTION:
Following broad management objectives as established by the Principal Investigators, incumbent will assist the top-level functional leaders with the oversight and operation of CDIP. Incumbent will be responsible for all aspects of the planning, organizing and supervising of a specialized real-time research program. These tasks will include 1) oversee mechanical and electronic engineering design and development required to meet project objectives for a variety of customers on an integrated, multi-agency, multi-user project; 2) oversee the field support and logistics including calibration and instrument deployment; 3) oversee the data management, providing expertise for a highly technical computational center which supports a near real-time monitoring program, dedicated to the collection, analysis, archiving and dissemination of coastal environmental data; 4) assist with the contract negotiations, proposal writing, and budget management and control. Supervise the technical and computer programming staff necessary for performing the group's mission.
~~Must be able to travel bi-monthly (approximately 4 days).
~~Must be able to be on call 24/7 if a buoy breaks loose. Must be able to be on call for 1 month, approximately every 5 months, for system monitoring.
~~Must be able to perform fieldwork using ships, small boats, helicopters, and small aircraft.
QUALIFICATIONS:
*Graduation from college with major work in Mechanical Engineering and five years Engineering experience in the planning, development, and construction of engineering systems, including two years in specialized design work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
*Experience and expertise in designing, testing and building oceanographic instruments and ocean structures, performing structural stress and hydrodynamic analysis and other oceanographic engineering functions. Experience in integrating new sensor systems into existing operational systems.
*Expert knowledge and understanding of Mechanical Engineering applications in physical oceanography, especially as they pertain to surface/sub-surface instruments used in oceanographic instrument arrays. Provide work direction for complex mechanical and electronic equipment.
*Skilled in digital signal processing, fluid dynamics, wave processes, statistical concepts and real time analysis of data. Advanced knowledge of physical oceanography measurement principles for pressure, waves, circulation, currents and winds. Expert knowledge of external forces such as the effects of saltwater and corrosion on ocean components and equipment.
*Proficient at managing a highly computational computer center. In-depth knowledge of UNIX system administration in a networked, heterogeneous computer environment. In depth knowledge of security compliancy. In depth knowledge of higher level application programs such as C and FORTRAN 90, including use of modules, library functions and debugging tools. In depth knowledge of scripting and graphical languages such as HTML, PHP, XML, MATLAB, GMT, nawk, csh and sh.
*Small boat handling skills, under a variety of offshore conditions. Strong knowledge of boat safety requirements. Proven ability to operate boats in safe manner. Proven work experience in safely operating a variety of vehicles such as trucks and forklifts.
*Proven skill to communicate and interact effectively using tact and diplomacy with a broad range of technical, administrative, scientific, vendor and agency personnel, as well as the general public. Proficient writing skills, especially for proposal and specialized technical report publication. Ability to create and present effective oral and written presentations.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
-Background check and valid CA driver's license required.
-Must have ability to obtain SIO research SCUBA diving certification. |
