DUTIES:
Serves as the supervisory watch-standing engineering officer onboard a 165’, 650 GRT, U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) inspected, American Bureau of Shipping classed, twin screw, diesel powered, passenger, tank, package freighter.
Supervises one USCG licensed Assistant Engineer and together they operate, maintain, repair, rebuild, advise and administrate the marine engineering functions of the vessel including cargo oil transfer functions under OPA-90, ballasting for stability, ballast treatment, fueling, crane maintenance and repair, emergency damage control, electronics installation, generator operation, engine room sanitary, potable water systems, maintenance and repair and the other mechanical functions of the vessel.
Monitors #2 oil inventories and schedules deliveries to three OPA-90 marine- transportation-related storage facilities at Isle Royale National Park. Also supervises and performs annual hydrostatic testing of all marine transfer lines used by NPS OPA-90 tank barge and tankship.
Submits annual budgets for engine room needs to the vessel Master for integration into the vessel, maintenance division and park budget process as well as planning documents for longer term 5-year dry-docking and anticipated replacement projects.
Drafts Scope-of-Work for Federal government contracting for repairs, machinery replacement, #2 oil purchases, maintenance and services, parts or for any items or services that exceed individual credit card limits.
During winter months, supervises and performs major maintenance, repair and rebuild projects as dictated by ABS, USCG or NPS. Also advises and monitors winter lay-up of NPS fleet vessel machinery, hulls and enginerooms for fire protection, security and watertight integrity.
Area Information:
The position is duty stationed in Houghton, Michigan, which has a population of approximately 10,000 and is a full-service community with schools, churches, medical services, and shopping. Higher education facilities are available at Michigan Technological University with a student population of 7,000 at Finlandia College, a private Lutheran college in Hancock. Housing is available for purchase in a wide range of prices ($50,000 to $350,000). Although rental houses are not as plentiful some are available, and rents range from $400 to $1000+ per month. Several smaller towns and villages that offer additional schools, housing, and shopping are located within a 30-mile radius. Summers are mild with day-time temperatures ranging from 70 to 90 degrees, and boating, camping, and hiking are popular summer activities. Winter temperatures range from highs of 25-30 degrees to lows of minus 10 degrees. Winter snowfall is abundant, averaging between 150 and 200 inches per year, with greater amounts falling in the more northerly parts of the area. Winter recreational activities include down-hill and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing.
Isle Royale is located in Lake Superior and is approximately 70 miles from Houghton, Michigan. The island is a wilderness park with limited access. Although the island is a remote wilderness, the seasonal headquarters area Mott Island has many of the amenities associated with a very small community.

REQUIREMENTS:
