Second Engineer, R/V Western Flyer

Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the Second Engineer ensures safe and efficient operation of the power plants on MBARI's vessels.  Provides assistance to the Chief Engineer in the maintenance, efficient operation and safety in the engine room. Ensures the safe operation of vessels as it pertains to the mechanical functions required to perform all normal research operations. Ensures equipment is in top condition at all times. Assists in the performance of preventive maintenance and repairs on all equipment including cranes, winches, etc.

Provides standby for engine room emergencies while ship is underway and makes regular inspections of engine room. Runs mains and generators. Performs maintenance projects and watchstanding.  Participates in deployment and recovery of the ROV, CTD rosette/sediment traps, etc. Performs related tasks as necessary. Assists with deck and small boat operations as assigned.

U.S.C.G. Third Assistant Engineer (2500 hp) or DDE (Designated Duty Engineer) 4,000 hp or higher license required. Must display proficiency in operating and maintaining a variety of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems. Must have excellent communication and organizational skills.  Must be able to work with diverse groups of people. Must be able to lift up to 35 lbs. Ability to step up three feet. Ability to work in hazardous marine environment.  Ability to work up to one month continuously at sea between port calls.
